The semester is wrapping up and if you’re anything like us, exchange is pretty much all you’re thinking about. In this week’s post we’ve partnered with The Study Abroad Memo, written by current exchange students studying at Queen’s this semester. Check out their post for their perspective on exchange essentials! Keep reading to get the rundown on everything you should have to make your exchange room comfortable and safe, plus fit it all in your carry on!

1. Posters
We’re betting that you’ll go to at least one art museum on exchange, so why not pick up the poster version of your favourite priceless painting? It will add a pop of colour to your room and make for a great souvenir to bring home. Make it stand out even more by creating tape designs to frame it instead of trying to hang a heavy frame.

2. Adaptors
The last thing you want is to realize our laptop charger doesn’t fit into the outlets in your room. Buy adaptors, enough said.

3. Command Hooks
Since you’ll only be living in your room for a few months, there’s no way you’re going to bother with building an IKEA dresser and installing an elaborate closet organization system. An easy way to add some extra space is by installing Command hooks. There’s no need for nails and a hammer, the hangers stick to the wall and can hold all the cozy sweaters and scarves your heart desires.

4. Roll-Up Throw Blankets
Even if your exchange destination is going to be warm and sunny (lucky!!), you never know where you’ll end up travelling to. For this reason, it’s a great idea to bring a roll-up throw blanket. It’s perfect for cooler nights in your bedroom or any spontaneous camping trips you might take.

5. Calendar
Let’s be real, we doubt our calendars on exchange are going to be filled with group meetings, tests and assignments the way they are now, but you’ll definitely want to keep track of all the trips you have planned!! For this reason, we recommend hanging a calendar in your room. It adds some colour if you pick one with cool designs and is perfect for counting down to all your weekend getaways. Check out the one below from Indigo:

6. Portable Safe
As fun as exchange is going to be, it’s also important for you to keep yourself and your belongings safe. If you’re going to be in hostels and school residences, chances are they won’t be equipped with safes, so we recommend buying your own travel sized version like this one to store your passport and any other important documents.
